Universiti Malaya (UM) is the first university to have been established in Malaya. lts establishment in8th October 1949 helped to accelerate the advancement of education in Malaya at the time and led to the founding of two autonomous branches in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore in 1959. With the passing of the Universiti Malaya Act in 1961, UM has since been recognised as a public university in Malaysia.
UM’ s Dance Department is under the Faculty of Creative Arts. The Dance Department has emerged as a leading provider of dance studies in the country by focusing on various forms of dance research that align with the university’s mission of “pushing the boundaries of knowledge and nurturing aspiring leaders.’
The Bachelor of Dance program focuses on theory and practice, and students enrol in a balance of theoretical and practical courses every semester. The Master of Dance programme is the first full course.work postgraduate programme in Malaysia. lt offers a strong foundation in dance while presenting excit-.ing and imaginative ways of thinking about and practising dance as a means to advance inguiry indance studies. The Master of Arts (Dance) and PhD programmes are research-focus programmeswhich are designed for more advanced applicants who have a background in the arts and humanitieswho already possess experience in academic writing and research.
